Best Kofta Curry: Perfect Beef Meatball Gravy Recipe

Kofta Curry is a traditional meatball dish rooted in Persian and Indian culinary history, consisting of ground meat mixed with spices and served in a thick, flavorful gravy. The term kofta comes from the Persian word softan, which means to grind or to mash, reflecting the preparation of the meat. While variations exist across the Middle East and Balkans, the Indian subcontinent version is distinct for its use of vibrant dry spices like garam masala, turmeric, and cumin, combined with a base of onions, ginger, garlic, and yogurt or cream. Unlike Western meatballs often served with pasta, these koftas are designed to absorb the robust oils and essences of the curry sauce, serving as the centerpiece of a complete meal when paired with grains or breads.

Description

A rich and aromatic Indian-style kofta curry featuring tender beef meatballs simmered in a spiced tomato-cream gravy. Infused with garam masala, cumin, and turmeric, this halal-friendly dish pairs perfectly with rice or naan.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 inch ginger, grated
1 cup plain yogurt
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp chili powder
1 tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp black pepper
2 tomatoes, chopped
1 cup coconut milk (for non-dairy halal option)
2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
Salt to taste

Instructions

In a large bowl, mix ground beef, chopped onion, garlic, ginger, yogurt, turmeric, cumin, chili powder, garam masala, black pepper, and salt.
Form the mixture into 12 meatballs.
Heat oil in a heavy pot over medium heat. Brown meatballs in batches, then set aside.
In the same pot, sauté chopped onion until golden. Add garlic, ginger, and spices; cook for 2 minutes.
Stir in cooked tomatoes, simmer until thickened. Add coconut milk and bring to a gentle boil.
Return meatballs to the pot, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes.
Adjust seasoning and thicken with a bit of flour mixed in water if desired.

Notes

Use halal-certified beef for authenticity.
Replace coconut milk with thin gravied if preferred.
Store leftovers refrigerated for up to 3 days.
Optional: Add spinach or potatoes to the gravy for a heartier meal.
