Description

This comforting and robust casserole reimagines the classic sloppy joe as a crowd-pleasing, one-dish meal. A savory, tangy tomato-based ground beef mixture serves as the foundation, topped with herb-infused, buttery biscuit dumplings and finished with a generous layer of melted sharp cheddar cheese. Effortless and ideal for family gatherings, this dish marries the sweet-and-savory profile of a classic sandwich with the rich, flaky texture of coastal-inspired biscuits, ensuring a seamless and satisfying bake every time.

Ingredients

1.5 lbs extra lean ground beef
1 small yellow onion, finely diced
1/2 cup ketchup
1/4 cup tomato sauce
2 tbsp brown sugar
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (halal certified)
1 tsp garlic powder
2 cups biscuit baking mix
2/3 cup whole milk
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 tsp garlic herb seasoning blend
2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef with the diced onions until fully cooked; drain excess fat.
Stir in the ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder; simmer for 5 minutes until thickened.
Spread the meat mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
In a medium bowl, combine the biscuit mix, milk, melted butter, garlic herb seasoning, and half of the shredded cheese until a soft dough forms.
Drop spoonfuls of the biscuit dough over the beef mixture.
Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese and fresh parsley over the top of the biscuits.
Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.

Notes

Ensure the ground beef is well-drained before adding the sauce to prevent a soggy crust. For extra flavor, you can brush the tops of the biscuits with a little additional melted butter mixed with garlic powder right before serving.
