Ingredients
1 lb lean ground beef
1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
1 large egg
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (halal certified)
Salt and black pepper to taste
2 tbsp olive oil
1 small onion, thinly sliced
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
2 cups beef broth (halal)
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 tbsp tomato paste
Instructions
In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well combined.
Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned, then remove and set aside.
In the same skillet, add sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking until soft and golden.
Stir in the tomato paste and flour, cooking for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
Slowly whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping the bottom of the pan to release any browned bits.
Simmer the sauce until it begins to thicken.
Return the beef patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 5-8 minutes until cooked through and coated in the gravy.
Serve hot over mashed potatoes or steamed rice.
Notes
Ensure your Worcestershire sauce does not contain alcohol or non-halal additives. Use fresh mushrooms for the best texture in the gravy. For a gluten-free twist, substitute breadcrumbs for almond flour and use a gluten-free flour blend for thickening.
